Saving, exporting and recovery

Export FileTally results to CSV and JSONL, copy a summary, reopen saved scans, and handle stopped or interrupted scans without losing work.

FileTally 1.0 · Windows and Mac

Export the results

  1. Let the scan finish, then check Count details and Review.
  2. Choose Export and pick a new destination folder. FileTally writes a CSV report, which opens in Excel, and a JSONL report for scripts. It does not overwrite an existing destination.
  3. Open the CSV and check the scope, page counts, paths and excluded files before sharing it.

For a short handoff, Copy summary puts a one-line summary of the scan on your clipboard. To export every scan automatically, turn on Export reports when done under Options before you start.

Keep the date, app version and any unresolved exclusions with your handoff. An export can reveal filenames and folder paths; share it through your organization’s approved channel.

An export is a snapshot

An exported report records a scan at a point in time. Moving or editing the source documents does not make an old export current. Run another scan to report changes and retain the earlier export when a comparison matters.

Open the CSV in a spreadsheet application. To review the scan itself again, reopen the saved scan rather than the export.

Reopen a saved scan

Every scan is saved as a .filetally file in the results folder you chose. Reopen it from Recent scans or Open saved scan. Reviewing a saved scan does not rescan or change the source folder, and it does not modify the saved file.

Saved scans stay available for review after a trial ends. Keep a copy of a .filetally file before attempting any repair, and do not rename or edit it to fix a problem. Ask support instead.

If you stop a scan

Use Cancel scan. Finished files are saved first, and the results are labeled Scan stopped early. Files and folders not yet reached are not included; do not present a stopped scan as a complete collection.

A network or cloud read can delay an operation. Avoid repeatedly launching scans against an unavailable location. Restore access or use an authorized local copy, then start a fresh scan and review its coverage.

Interrupted scans

If FileTally or your computer stops during a scan, the completed work can be recovered into a new results folder. Recovered results are partial: check their coverage before relying on a total. Recovery does not overwrite the original saved scan.

Keep completed exports outside the source folder. If an export did not finish, no complete export exists; export again to a new destination.
