Formats and counting methods

Understand how FileTally 1.0 counts PDFs, Office documents, images, text, email and ZIPs, including estimates, permissions and unsupported files.

FileTally 1.0 · Windows and Mac

PDFs and Office documents

  • PDF: pages are counted from the document’s page tree. Protected, damaged or unreadable files are excluded with the reason. Image-only PDFs still have pages; a page count is not a count of words or OCR results.
  • Word: DOC and DOCX pages are estimated from the body text on a standard page, without Microsoft Office. The estimate does not reproduce Word’s own layout, so check the source application when the exact printed count matters.
  • PowerPoint: one page per slide. Printed handout layout can place several slides on one sheet; state which unit your handoff needs.

A familiar extension does not guarantee a readable file. Keep conversion work separate and retain the originals.

Spreadsheets

FileTally estimates XLS and XLSX pages from each sheet’s used range on a standard page grid. A spreadsheet’s details show each sheet’s used range, populated cells, page grid and estimated pages. The saved print area is not applied and formulas are not recalculated, so actual printed pages may differ.

Populated cells are a separate spreadsheet metric, shown beside the page total and never added to it. Cells, worksheets and pages are different units. Check the print area, paper, scale, orientation and hidden content in the source application when the printed total matters.

If a result has no page estimate or cell count, leave it unavailable. Do not substitute zero or invent a conversion between cells and pages. A count does not establish whether formulas or external links are current.

Images, email and text

  • TIFF: every frame in a multi-page TIFF is counted as a page.
  • JPG, PNG and BMP: one page per image. This is a page value set by rule, not a printed-page measurement.
  • MSG and EML: estimated from the message headers and text. Attachments and nested messages are noted, not counted, and don’t become separate files in the scan.
  • Text: TXT pages are estimated from a standard page layout. Keep the estimate label visible.

ZIPs and unsupported files

Look inside ZIP files is on by default. Supported files inside a ZIP are counted in place, without extracting them, and appear as their own entries next to the ZIP container. The container adds no pages. Check this setting before comparing file counts with File Explorer or Finder.

Unsupported, locked, unreadable or online-only files are excluded with the reason. Renaming the extension does not convert a file. Use an authorized application if a conversion or print reference is needed, then retain both the original and the conversion record.
