Your first folder scan
Install FileTally for Windows or Mac, choose a readable folder and a results folder, then check how the total adds up before exporting a report.
FileTally 1.0 · Windows and Mac
1. Install FileTally
Get FileTally from Downloads, which lists the current files and checksums. Keep the download source and version with your installation records.
- Windows: run the signed installer. FileTally runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 and uses Microsoft Edge WebView2.
- Mac: unzip the signed and notarized download and move FileTally to Applications. It needs macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel.
Follow your organization’s software policy. If installation is blocked, ask your administrator; do not disable system protections.
The seven-day trial begins with your first scan. See licensing setup for an existing purchase.
2. Prepare a small folder
Choose a folder you can already open in File Explorer or Finder. For a first check, use a few PDFs with known page counts. Close documents that are still being saved. Leave the source collection in place while scanning.
Make online-only documents available locally before scanning. Confirm that a network share is connected and that you have read access. A visible filename alone does not mean its contents can be read.
3. Start a scan
- Open FileTally and choose New scan.
- Under Folder to count, choose the folder. Its subfolders are included.
- Under Save results in, choose where the saved scan should go. A folder outside the source collection keeps the two apart.
- Open Options if needed. Look inside ZIP files is on by default; Find exact duplicates is off.
- Choose Start scan. Let the scan finish before treating the result as a complete inventory.
A mixed collection uses different counting methods for different formats. Format guidance explains the differences.
4. Review and export
Open Count details to see counted and estimated pages, then open Review to see each excluded file and its reason. Compare a known PDF with its result. An inaccessible folder may contain an unknown number of files and pages, and a completed scan can still have exclusions.
Use Export for a per-file CSV and JSONL report, or Copy summary for a short handoff. See Reading results and Saving, exporting and recovery.
