For one Word document, the status bar tells you the page count. For five hundred, opening each file is the slowest possible workflow, and copying the numbers into a spreadsheet adds a second chance to get it wrong.

The free method: File Explorer's Pages column

This is the method most people want, so here it is first. It comes from a long-standing ILTA tip:

  1. Close the Word files and open the folder in File Explorer.
  2. Switch to Details view.
  3. Right-click the column headers and choose More.
  4. Tick Pages and click OK.

The setting applies to the current folder unless you apply it to all folders in Folder Options. For a handful of documents in one folder, you are done.

Why is the Pages column blank?

The column shows a page count stored in each file's properties. If a file doesn't store one, the column is blank (ILTA). Text files and images never have it. Because it is a saved value rather than a fresh layout of the document, treat it as a quick guide, not a figure to bill on.

It also stops at the folder you are looking at. Subfolders, a total, and an export all have to be done by hand. Our comparison of the manual method walks through that cost.

The batch method with FileTally

FileTally counts every DOC and DOCX in the folder tree in one scan. When Microsoft Office is installed, it uses Word automation for layout-accurate counts. Without Office it falls back to document metadata and labels the result, so the person receiving the number knows how it was counted.

  • Count Word documents across every subfolder at once.
  • See each result marked Exact or Estimated.
  • Export CSV or XLSX with one row per document, or a printable PDF summary.
  • Keep the documents on your PC. Nothing is uploaded or modified.

If Word files are only part of the folder, see the complete guide to counting mixed folders. FileTally includes a 7-day trial that begins on your first scan.

Questions people ask

How do I see page counts for multiple Word documents in File Explorer?

Open the folder in Details view, right-click the column headers, choose More, tick Pages and click OK. Word files that store a page count show it in the new column.

Why is the Pages column blank in File Explorer?

The column shows a page count stored in each file's properties. Files that don't store one, such as text files and images, show a blank value.

Does FileTally need Microsoft Word installed?

No, but it helps. With Office installed, FileTally uses Word automation for layout-accurate counts. Without it, FileTally uses document metadata and labels the result so you know how it was counted.

Can I count Word documents in subfolders too?

Yes. FileTally scans the chosen folder and all of its subfolders in one pass and exports one row per document.
